Offices and The Creativity Zone

Playing devil’s advocate:  How can an employer be certain that you’re more productive at home?  What makes your home more productive?  Is it fair that managers expect more from you when you work from home (since you claim it’s more productive)?

Sometimes we have to honestly answer what’s our motivation to “work” from home.  Is it the cool factor?  The ability to set my own time?  You hate that someone is looking over your shoulder?  Is it the interruption (as if there’s none at home)?

The street goes both ways in the W@H debate.

cubicle17:

I’m a huge advocate of allowing employees to work from home when they want or on a schedule that’s the most conducive to how they work, and Dan Benjamin explains why better than I ever could have:

Most people’s work environments, most typical offices, are actually harmful to the ability of developers, designers, writers, and other creative people to get into The Zone (see below).

Think about it: you’re hiring somebody who needs to concentrate to be productive, and then you’re putting them in a situation where they can’t.
